iPhone causes OS X Leopard delay

Those of us waiting for Mac OS X Leopard (10.5) will just have to wait a little longer. Apple says they’re sorry but they had to borrow some of the great minds working at the software engineering and QA departments to finish iPhone in time. The new launch date for Leopard is now October 2007.

They will however hand out near final beta copies to those attending the WWDC conference in June.

iPhone has already passed several of its required certification tests and is on schedule to ship in late June as planned. We can’t wait until customers get their hands (and fingers) on it and experience what a revolutionary and magical product it is. However, iPhone contains the most sophisticated software ever shipped on a mobile device, and finishing it on time has not come without a price.

My sixth sense tells me to bet on “2007/10/5” as the actual release date…

Quick bookmark jumping in Opera 9.2

Opera 9.2

The Windows, Linux, Mac, cell-phone and Wii-running web browser Opera has been updated to version 9.2 and one of the new features in this version (except that it’s now available in 31 languages) is the Speed Dial function.

When you open a new tab you’re presented with nine empty slots instead of the usual blank page. In these slots you can put quick-links (along with automatic thumbnails) to the websites you visit the most. Later you can either click on the thumbnails to navigate or just press ctrl/apple-1-9 to jump right away – it’s actually very usable as soon as you remember the numbers.

IM-client Gaim is now known as Pidgin

The multi-protocol instant messaging client Gaim is from now on known as Pidgin after legal issues with AOL (the same company that made them switch names two times before as well).

If you wonder what a Pidgin is Wikipedia says:

“A pidgin, or contact language, is the name given to any language created, usually spontaneously, out of two or more languages as a means of communication between speakers of different tongues, and usually a simplified form of one of the languages. Pidgins have simplified grammars and few synonyms, serving as auxiliary contact languages. They are learned as second languages rather than natively.”

Gaim.. sorry, Pidgin, is a sweet piece of free software running on Linux, BSD, MacOS X and Windows which can connect to multiple AIM, ICQ, MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, IRC, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, SILC, Novell GroupWise Messenger, Lotus Sametime, and Zephyr accounts at the same time. Try it if you haven’t already – the 2.0 version will be released sometime this week.

Steem: Free Atari STE emulator

Steem is a free Atari STE emulator available for Windows and Linux and apparently it runs almost every ST program ever made without hassle.

This could be worth a download for anyone looking for a bit of nostalgia through games, demoscene productions, midi apps… the only thing missing would be the dear old floppy drive noise.

Coolest audio-visualization ever?

Magnetosphere

Mmm, generative graphics. Magnetosphere is an audio visualization-themed music video of a song by Trentemoller by Robert Hodgin. You just have to watch this – the visualizers in iTunes suddenly have a very 2006-feel to them.

(It’s created in Processing, an open source programming language and environment for people who want to program images, animation and sound)

TipKalc calculates the tip on your iPod

Tipkalc

Koloroo’s iPod widget TipKalc turns your iPod into an easy to use tip calculator. Just load it as soon as the bill hits your table and let it calculate and/or split 15% / 20% tips for you and your friends.

It’s a shame they want $5 for it though – and that’s on the current sale, before they wanted $20 for it. Someone ought to make a free-as-in-beer clone of this.

Video: Folding@Home on PS3

Here’s a video clip of Folding@Home running on a Playstation 3, even though I’m more of a WorldCommunityGrid.org person myself I’m all for the idea of forming a global do-good-for-humanity super computer by using the otherwise unused CPU cycles in idle computers (and now consoles) all over the world.

…And besides the obvious humanitarian aspect it makes a pretty cool screensaver for your TV.

See the video after the jump:
