Time for some nostalgia; this Sunday it’ll be 10 years since Apple cancelled one of their oddest computers, the Power Mac G4 Cube. I haven’t thought about this one for quite a while, but it’s still a beautiful machine and it really pushed the boundaries for how a computer could look like back then. Hell, if you’d just re-design the grill on top it’d still look good on a desktop today.

The G4 Cube didn’t become the success Apple had hoped for so it lived a relatively short life. The cubic 8" computer was suspended in a 10" clear housing and there was no visible buttons. Also, to live up to the ads proclaiming it as “a super fast, super quiet super computer – in an 8 inch cube” it ran without a fan, using a convection system to suck up air through the housing instead.

The retro-lookin’ Breville VTT296 2 Slice Radio Toaster might just cheer up any breakfast. The toaster part of this comes with nifty features like a reheat button as well as a defrost button which lengthens the toasting time needed for frozen bread, removable crumb tray and cord storage. The AM/FM radio allows 10 pre-set stations, and comes an illuminated graphic display, preset graphic equializer and a line-in jack if you’d like to hook up your mp3 player instead. Well, I know it’s been done before, but I really like the 1950s feel of it.

Freshpilot reviews: I’m a big fan of retro headphones and i-Mego goes way back with the Retro Headphones, resembling the old Shure microphones Elvis used back in the 50′s. Now, before i-Mego sent me a pair to review I’ve got to admit I thought they’d might be more style over substance, but I changed my mind as soon as I unboxed them and felt the weight of them. No flimsy plastic here.

The Retro headphones are i-Mego’s range-topping line (sold for about $70) currently consisting of two models: Classic (chrome/white) mainly meant for human, vocal, new age and classical music and Heavy Beats (brown/gun metal) meant for R&B, Hip hop and rock.

I’ve compared the Classic model to my pair of Sennheiser HD 205′s and PX-100′s and considering the product description I thought the Classic might risk being a bit too weak on the bass for my music taste, but they handled well. Well indeed. I haven’t been able to compare the Classic to the brown Heavy Beats model, but style matters here at Freshpilot, and I’m enjoying some fine Groove Armada and Mumford & Sons bass in them as I write this.

It wasn’t much of a surprise to find that they treated spoken word and jazz well, but I was glad to hear that they continued to deal well with pretty much anything I threw at them, ranging from modern rock to folk to metal, drum&bass, 8-bit retro bitpop and a whole lot of skate punk. I’ve got an unholy playlist for these things.

On the tech side you get two high performance 40mm drivers with 20Hz-20kHz frequency response, 32ohms impedance and 106±5db sensitivity. The top of the 3.5mm jack is encased in metal and the cable is pretty short (about 1m), which I’m all for. Besides the chromed metal you get a whole lot of padded white faux leather, softening it up.

Verdict:
I’d be happy to use the Retro Classics as my standard at-home headphones. I’m saying “At-home” since while the design is excellent these phones might be a bit too much for me to pull off in public. But they look good, real good. Stylish enough not to be hidden when you’re not using them. I’m no audiophile by any means, but the sound suits me with its warmth, allowing enough bass while I don’t feel like I’m losing anything in the higher frequencies. I’ve got a pretty big head (my Sennheiser HD 205′s felt really tight when I got them) and these fit great right from the start. Not too tight, not too loose.

Shortly put, it’s a well-built pair of headphones that sure stands out from the crowd, I’d buy ‘em.

Commodore USA just announced that they will release the Commodore PC64 later this year, an “exact” replica of the good old C64 with beige chassi but this time being an Intel Atom-powered PC sporting 4GB DD3 memory, 1TB SATA hard drive, HDMI, and DVD/CD drive (or optional Blu-ray). Sweet! According to Commodore they expect it to hit the markets before the holidays, no word on pricing yet though.

That old keyboard sure brings back some good memories for me – my first computer was a Commodore VIC-20 before I moved on up to a C64.

The authentic F-4 bucket seat has been left in original condition to reflect this Vietnam era bird.”

If the F-4 seat isn’t enough for you there’s a B-52 ejection seat and C-130 navigator chair as well. Now, these chairs are hand-made and you have to contact Motoart for a price inquiry, so let’s just assume they’re really, really expensive.

Oh man, I remember buying a Panasonic DMC-LX2 just for the old-school look of it, but Olympus PEN E-P1 gives me an even stronger crave. Olympus launched the original half-frame film PEN in 1959 and now this light-weight little device with interchangeable lens is available in a modern, digital form.

Besides the striking looks you get 12.3 megapixels, TruePic V image processing engine to provide high quality stills (equivalent to traditional SLR’s according to Olympus, but you know), 3 inch display, level gauge to help you shoot straight horizons, HDMI output, stereo audio recording and the possibility to record 720p HD movies. Software-wise you get face detection, automatic shadow adjustment and manual focus assistance.

The PEN will start selling in July 2009, no word on pricing though.

Check out the PEN E-P1 gallery after the jump!
