Zonbu: Eco-friendly, tiny computer

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007
Zonbu

The Zonbu is something of a new take on home computing. The actual device is small, silent, Linux-based (KDE) and eco-friendly and instead of a regular hard drive it features 4 GB of Flash based storage.

The grand thought behind the Zonbu is to sign up for a subscription ranging from Zonbu lite ($12.95/month) to Zonbu premium ($19.95/month) for on-line storage space at their ‘disaster-proof’ servers ranging from 25 to 100 GB as well as automatic backups, application and OS maintenance, free upgrades, free device replacement and unlimited online support.

My take: Personally I’d love to see more mini computers running Linux on the market (both the GNOME and KDE desktop environments are quite mature nowadays) but please, give me local storage.

T&MOUSE: Two-in-one Tablet Mouse

Hanwang Tablet Mouse

Hanwang presented this two-in-one tablet mouse dubbed T&MOUSE at Chitec 2007. Apparently it offers both a (tiny) tablet area for handwriting and sketching along with the regular functions you’d expect of a mouse.

So, if you’re into miniature drawings, this might just be something for you.

Wireless wall-mounted printer concept

Wall-mounted printer

Ransmeier & Floyd showcased this printer concept at ICFF (International Contemporary Furniture Fair) in New York and it struck me as pretty clever. If you’re going to have a printer, why not a flat (and wireless) one mounted on the wall?

The design could perhaps have been a little bit less IBM-ish, but I really like the idea.

Optimus Maximus Keyboards sold out

Monday, May 21st, 2007
Optimus Maximus

Art. Lebedev Studio’s Optimus Maximus Keyboard featuring tiny, configurable OLED-displays on every key (yeah, it’s back to every key now and in color and with support for animations in 10 FPS, see more pictures here) was first announced to cost about $300. After sensing the bitter taste of reality (and noticing the huge demand) they’ve upped the price to about $1600 and actually put up 200 of them for pre-order.

Those 200 are - of course - long gone, but there’ll be 400 more of them shipping in January next year. My guess is that there’s probably more than 400 eager early-adopters waiting in line, so don’t get your hopes up on getting one from the next batch either.

Interesting to see what one of the first 200 would make on eBay though.

Rugged Mac Mini for military use

Thursday, May 10th, 2007
Rugged Mac Mini

Victor System’s Rugged Mini Computer is actually a heavily modified and uglified Mac Mini designed for the military. The regular, stylish case has been upgraded to an aircraft grade aluminum alloy fastened and bonded using electrically conductive epoxy supposed to protect your machine from nastiness like bumps, scratches, moisture, dust and LAN-parties.

Besides the actual computer they have rugged keyboards, monitors, mice and speakers as well.

USB Big Fan is seven inches tall

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007
USB Big Fan

The USB Big Fan is probably the first USB-powered fan I’ve seen that actually looks like it can manage to cool someone off a really hot summer day. It’s seven inches tall, runs on either USB power or four AA batteries and can either stand on your desk or hang on the wall. The orange color is unnegotiable though.

Pill shaped USB Drive

Let’s all thank whatever you’ve chosen to believe in for the USB ports and all the weird products they inspire companies to create each day. This is the Pill Shape 4GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive and well… The name says it all, doesn’t it? Just make sure you keep it out of reach from children and junkies.
