iFireplace: When iPodizing goes too far

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

Okay, this product isn’t really named iFireplace, it’s called “FRP4300 Fireplace” but the name could just as well have been iFireplace since the only thing that differs this thing from the rest is that it comes with an integrated iPod dock along with a bunch of flat speakers. Sheesh.

I know there’s plenty of one-hit-wonders out there eager to find crappy, expensive stuff to blow their soon-to-be-gone money on so they can show it off on MTV Cribs (”and here’s my fridge, ‘cuz you gotta stay hydrated, you know what I mean… and here’s my iPod integrated fireplace…”) but really, haven’t the whole iPodizing business gone a bit too far?

Anyone who consider buying this should perhaps consider spending the money on an economic advisor instead. Just a thought.

XtremeMac Luna

There’s quite a few iPod docks out there and while many of them fail to interest me XtremeMac’s Luna didn’t. It’s not particularly new (been around for a couple of months) but who cares, it’s a stylish white-on-black dock compatible with most iPods (from Nano to Video) which features 2x full-range speakers powered by a two-channel amp, AM/FM radio, a remote control, aux-in jack for external audio, a display with adjustable brightness (with menus that resemble the iPod’s), gradually increasing or decreasing volume options for waking up / going to sleep and a customizable snooze-length.

The metal rings on the top is actually controllers for bass, treble, radio and volume.

TipKalc calculates the tip on your iPod

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007
Tipkalc

Koloroo’s iPod widget TipKalc turns your iPod into an easy to use tip calculator. Just load it as soon as the bill hits your table and let it calculate and/or split 15% / 20% tips for you and your friends.

It’s a shame they want $5 for it though - and that’s on the current sale, before they wanted $20 for it. Someone ought to make a free-as-in-beer clone of this.

Creative’s wireless iPod dock

Creative Xdock

Creative presented their iPod dock Xdock Wireless at CeBIT. Besides doing what any old dock does it can enhance the sound to Xtreme Fidelity and DTS Surround, be connected to a TV to show movies and pictures (S-video, composite video-out), line-in for not-made-by-Apple-MP3-players and most of all be used with X-Fi Wireless Receivers to send audio to up to four locations in your crib. Remote control included, of course.

The Xdock Wireless will retail for $299.00, the X-Fi Wireless Receiver for $149.00.
