Amazon sure made a buzz today when they launched the new line of Kindles. The more basic ones (with really impressive price tags) are All-new Kindle (price-dropped to $79), the Kindle Touch ($99, wi-fi + 6" e-ink display), Kindle Touch 3G ($149, 3G + Wi-fi + 6" e-ink display) but the one everybody’s talking about now is the Kindle Fire ($199).

The Kindle Fire sports a dual-core processor, a 7" color touchscreen protected with Gorilla glass (chemically strengthened to be 30 times harder than plastic) with a rubberized backside as well as free storage in the Amazon Cloud and a new web browser (Amazon Silk) which utilizes the cloud to speed up the browsing experience. According to Gizmodo the performance is amazing as well. Although it hasn’t right now, it’ll have a native e-mail client soon, as well as the ability to read Office documents.

There’s no shortage of content for it either, there’s 100,000 movies and TV shows available from Amazon Instant Video, 1,000,000 Kindle books and over 17,000,000 songs at Amazon MP3. Add compatibility with Android apps and games and you’re set (yup, you’ll get your Angry Birds).

So, this serious iPad competitor is yours for a mere $199 and will start shipping November 15th. I bet someone’s uneasy over in Cupertino all of a sudden.

Belkin’s Chef Stand + Stylus is designed to make cooking while using your iPad / tablet a whole lot easier (or, less messy at least). The case-compatible stand sports a non-slip rubber base and the magnetic tip on the wand works with any touchscreen.

Time for some nostalgia; this Sunday it’ll be 10 years since Apple cancelled one of their oddest computers, the Power Mac G4 Cube. I haven’t thought about this one for quite a while, but it’s still a beautiful machine and it really pushed the boundaries for how a computer could look like back then. Hell, if you’d just re-design the grill on top it’d still look good on a desktop today.

The G4 Cube didn’t become the success Apple had hoped for so it lived a relatively short life. The cubic 8" computer was suspended in a 10" clear housing and there was no visible buttons. Also, to live up to the ads proclaiming it as “a super fast, super quiet super computer – in an 8 inch cube” it ran without a fan, using a convection system to suck up air through the housing instead.

So, what happens when you mix an iPad and a MacBook? Probably something close to the new and updated MacBook Air presented by Steve Jobs tonight. These beauties will be available in both 11 and 13 inch models, weighing just 2.9 pounds, 0.68 inches thin. As for the batteries Apple promises 30 hours of standby time (or 7 hours of usage) on one charge for the 13 inch model and 20 hours standby vs 5 hours of usage on the 11 incher.

Now, the 11 inch model starts at $999 while the 13 inch model starts at $1299.

This is AlessiTab, a new tablet from Italian Alessi sporting a 10.1" HD touchscreen and running Android 2.1 with graphics by Italian designer Stefano Giovannoni. This device aims at becoming a natural helper in the Italian kitchen, and I sure wouldn’t mind having one in mine.

RIM announced the Blackberry PlayBook at their BlackBerry Developer Conference. This slick tablet weighs less than a pound and sports a 7" 1024×600 WSVGA LCD-display with full multi-touch and gesture support, 1 GHz dual-core CPU, 1GB RAM, 1080p HD video playback (H.264, MPEG, DivX, WMV) and MP3, AAC, WMA audio playback, HDMI video output, 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 and microHDMI + microUSB connectors.

The PlayBook runs Blackberry Tablet OS, a QNX-based multi-tasking operating system and the application platform is open, supporting WebKit/HTML5, Adobe Flash Player 10.1, Adobe Mobile AIR, OpenGL and Java.

The PlayBook won’t have support for 3G or 4G at first, but models supporting both will be available in the future. The launch date for the first model is expected to be sometime during early 2011 in the U.S. and then rollouts to international markets soon thereafter.

D-Link’s Boxee Box is finally up for pre-order for those of you living in the US and Canada, and man, I really love the design on this one. This little box is ready to bring you all your tv shows, downloaded movies and streamed DRM-free content right to your HDTV and with a really neat remote sporting a full qwerty keyboard on the backside.

The Boxee Box will have a slightly later launch for Europe and Australia, the release date is set to November 2010.

(If you haven’t tried Boxee yet you can always download it for free and use it on your current Windows, Mac or Linux computer – I’m using a Shuttle PC running Boxee on Ubuntu Linux as media player at home.)

Commodore USA just announced that they will release the Commodore PC64 later this year, an “exact” replica of the good old C64 with beige chassi but this time being an Intel Atom-powered PC sporting 4GB DD3 memory, 1TB SATA hard drive, HDMI, and DVD/CD drive (or optional Blu-ray). Sweet! According to Commodore they expect it to hit the markets before the holidays, no word on pricing yet though.

That old keyboard sure brings back some good memories for me – my first computer was a Commodore VIC-20 before I moved on up to a C64.

Dell has teamed up with Threadless and will offer 11 of their t-shirt designs as laptop covers through Dell Design Studio. The Threadless picks are available on Dell Studio laptops and Inspiron Mini netbooks and will be changed several times a year to offer fresh, new crowd-sourced designs.
