Steampunk Retro Keyboard

Fond of those old “clicky” IBM Model M keyboards but want something that’ll stand up against the wear and tear of everyday use even better? Well, why not follow Steampunk Workshop’s guide to modding one with actual typewriter keys (among other things).

Print and fold your own TIE-fighters

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007

SF Papercraft features tons of famous space ships and vehicles from movies like Star Wars and Star Trek as PDFs for to you to download, print and fold yourself. The end result is actually pretty amazing.

As with so many other interesting things in this world the website seems to be mostly in Japanese though. Bummer.

Pixelator: Unauthorized pixel art in NYC

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007

Pixelator

The Pixelator is an unauthorized and on-going video art project in which artists create their own “pixel boards” to mount on top of the flat screens located at subway entrances in New York City - pixels says more than words so watch the video below.

“In an attempt to broaden the scope of MTA’s video art series, Pixelator takes video pieces currently on display and diffuses them into a pleasant array of 45 blinking, color-changing squares. Since the project is an anonymous collaboration, the resulting video is almost entirely unplanned and unanticipated, with the original artists helping to create new works of art without any knowledge of their participation.”

Check out the video below.

How to make an alien-proof tin foil hat

Monday, April 2nd, 2007

If there’s anything the kids ought to be taught in school it’s about the beams aliens constantly send out to read our minds. Really. And why aren’t they informed about this integrity invasion? Conspiracy! Huh? Anyone?

For those who actually do know (and care) about the alien beams there’s different methods of protection, one being the classic tin foil hat seen in countless movies (which is why some people refer to tin foil as ‘dynamic space-age metal’). But you wouldn’t want to look like a complete fashion disaster wearing it, right? Here’s a couple of different models available for buying (or DIY for those confident enought to fold their own mind-beam protection).

Speakerdogs: Download, print & fold

Speakerdog

Tired of your plain old office desk? Then why not download one of Ben the Illlustrator’s Speakerdogs designed by himself and a bunch of other designers - just use some of that (free) company printer ink to print one out and then cut / fold / glue it together and you’re done.

If you have artistic skills (or prefer extreme minimalism) there’s a blank Speakerdog available as well.

DIY: Hidden Jacket Cuff Lights

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

Nate True shows us how to equip any jacket with hidden cuff lights using his $20 kit:

“We’ve all been there. Fumbling around in a dark parking lot, trying to find the keyhole on the car door or mailbox. Sure, you’d use a flashlight, but who has the room for those bulky outlines?
Granted, the cuff lights aren’t the most practical of solutions but they’re damned cool. They’re hidden in your jacket cuffs, invisible and perfectly comfortable, just waiting to be activated with a little sideways pressure.”

Chromed Wii replacement shell

Monday, March 19th, 2007
I-Case

While large parts of the world still suffer from a severe lack of Wii’s there’s accessories and mods being made elsewhere for those who’ve grown tired of its default appearance. XCMLive sells this chromed replacement shell (The Chrome I-Case) for just $37.99. Apparently it’s supposed to be easy to snap on as well, always a relief.

And if chrome’s not your thing it’ll be available in black and blue as well soon.
